Backpacking trip through Bolivia

If we were asked suddenly what is the highest island in the world, maybe we would think of Hawaii or some other where its peaks draw a high profile.

But the surprise is that the highest island in the world is the Isla del sol, in Bolivia. In absolute terms, counting from sea level there is none that exceeds it. It is located in the heart of Lake Titikaka and to get there you have to move from La Paz to the town of Copacabana and then cross by boat. The Island of the Sun is a reserve so the visit must be very respectful. There we will find the Inca ruins of “Iñacuyo” with statues that honored the sun and the moon that, according to tradition, were molded respectively of gold and silver. The legend also says that God Viracocha ordered the moon to rise every day from the sky of this island. One of the most interesting points is undoubtedly the Temple of the Sun or Chinkana, (photo) a complex of labyrinthine Inca ruins dedicated to the great sun god.
